DEVELOPMENT OF AN EFFECTIVE MAINTENANCE CONCEPT FOR ENHANCEMENTOF COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE-A CASE STUDY OF EAST AFRICAN PORTLAND CEMENT COMPANY

Abstract:

This study delves into the development of a robust maintenance concept aimed at bolstering the competitive advantage of the East African Portland Cement Company (EAPCC). Maintenance management plays a pivotal role in ensuring the operational efficiency, reliability, and longevity of industrial assets, thereby directly influencing an organization’s competitiveness in the marketplace. Against the backdrop of intensifying competition in the cement industry, the need for an effective maintenance strategy becomes imperative for sustaining and enhancing market position.

Using a case study approach, this research investigates the current maintenance practices at EAPCC, identifies existing challenges and shortcomings, and proposes strategies for the development and implementation of a more effective maintenance concept. Drawing upon principles of reliability-centered maintenance (RCM), total productive maintenance (TPM), and predictive maintenance (PdM), the study aims to optimize asset performance, minimize downtime, and reduce maintenance costs while ensuring the highest standards of operational safety and environmental compliance.

The study assesses the potential impact of the proposed maintenance concept on EAPCC’s competitive position within the East African cement market. By enhancing asset reliability, improving production efficiency, and optimizing resource utilization, the implementation of an effective maintenance strategy is expected to contribute to EAPCC’s ability to meet market demand, deliver superior product quality, and respond agilely to changing customer needs and market dynamics.

Furthermore, the research explores the organizational and cultural factors that may influence the successful implementation of the maintenance concept at EAPCC. By considering the human element alongside technical and operational aspects, the study seeks to foster a culture of proactive maintenance, continuous improvement, and organizational learning within the company.

Overall, this study offers valuable insights into the development of an effective maintenance concept as a strategic enabler for enhancing competitive advantage in the cement industry. By aligning maintenance practices with business objectives and market demands, EAPCC can position itself as a market leader, driving sustainable growth, profitability, and stakeholder value in the dynamic East African cement market.
