CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

The use of chemical pesticides has been a cornerstone in modern agriculture for controlling pests and enhancing crop yields. However, excessive dependence on synthetic pesticides has led to significant environmental, health, and economic concerns. These include soil and water pollution, pesticide residues in food, and harmful effects on humans, livestock, and non-target organisms (Aktar, Sengupta, & Chowdhury, 2009). Consequently, there is growing interest in the development of environmentally safe pesticides that are biodegradable, non-toxic, and derived from renewable sources.

Farm residues, which include crop leftovers, plant stems, leaves, husks, and other agro-industrial by-products, are often discarded or burned, contributing to environmental degradation. However, these residues are rich in bioactive compounds such as alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids, and essential oils that can act as natural pest deterrents (Kumar et al., 2018). The utilization of these residues to develop environmentally safe pesticides aligns with the principles of sustainable agriculture, circular economy, and waste valorization (Regnault-Roger, Vincent, & Arnason, 2012).

Several studies have demonstrated that pesticides formulated from plant-based residues can be effective against a wide range of agricultural pests while minimizing environmental hazards (Isman, 2006; Pimentel, 2005). Such eco-friendly alternatives not only reduce reliance on harmful chemical pesticides but also provide a productive use for farm waste that would otherwise contribute to pollution.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite awareness of the environmental and health hazards posed by synthetic chemical pesticides, they remain widely used due to their immediate effectiveness and market availability. This reliance has resulted in pesticide-resistant pest populations, contamination of water bodies, and health risks for farmers and consumers (Aktar et al., 2009; Pimentel, 2005).

Farm residues, which could be harnessed to produce environmentally safe pesticides, are largely underutilized. Instead of serving as a source of bioactive compounds, these residues are often discarded or burned, further exacerbating environmental pollution and greenhouse gas emissions (Chauhan, Kumar, & Singh, 2020). This situation highlights the need for innovative research into the development of effective pesticides derived from farm residues to promote sustainable agriculture and environmental conservation.

1.3 Aim and Objectives of the Study

The primary aim of this study is to develop and manufacture environmentally safe pesticides from farm residues. The specific objectives are:

To identify farm residues with potential pesticidal properties.

To extract bioactive compounds from selected farm residues.

To formulate environmentally safe pesticides using the extracted compounds.

To evaluate the efficacy of the formulated pesticides against common agricultural pests.

To assess the environmental safety and biodegradability of the manufactured pesticides.

1.4 Research Questions

The study seeks to answer the following questions:

Which farm residues contain bioactive compounds with pesticidal properties?

How can bioactive compounds be effectively extracted from farm residues?

What methods can be employed to formulate environmentally safe pesticides from farm residues?

How effective are the formulated pesticides against selected agricultural pests compared to synthetic pesticides?

Are the developed pesticides environmentally safe and biodegradable?

1.5 Significance of the Study

The study is significant in several ways:

Environmental Sustainability: Utilizing farm residues to produce pesticides reduces environmental pollution and promotes biodegradable alternatives (Isman, 2006).

Economic Benefits: Farmers can reduce costs associated with chemical pesticides by using low-cost, locally available farm residues (Kumar et al., 2018).

Public Health: Environmentally safe pesticides reduce human exposure to toxic chemicals, minimizing health risks (Aktar et al., 2009).

Scientific Contribution: The study contributes to knowledge on the extraction, formulation, and efficacy of bio-based pesticides, encouraging further research in sustainable pest management.

1.6 Scope of the Study

This research focuses on farm residues such as crop stalks, husks, fruit peels, and leaves with known pesticidal properties. Laboratory-based experiments will be conducted to extract bioactive compounds and formulate environmentally safe pesticides. The efficacy of the pesticides will be tested against selected pests, and environmental safety assessments will evaluate their biodegradability and potential ecological impacts.

1.7 Limitations of the Study

Potential limitations of this study include:

Seasonal availability of specific farm residues.

Variability in the concentration of bioactive compounds in residues from different sources.
