Linking Economic Distress to the Rising Rate of Crime in Nigeria
Abstract
Economic hardship has become a persistent challenge in Nigeria, characterized by high unemployment, rising inflation, poverty, and declining living standards. These conditions have significant social consequences, one of which is the increasing rate of crime across the country. This study examines the relationship between economic hardship and crime in Nigeria, with the aim of understanding how economic pressures influence criminal behavior. The research adopts a descriptive and analytical approach, drawing on secondary data from national statistics, crime reports, and relevant literature. Key indicators of economic hardship—such as unemployment, income inequality, and cost of living—are analyzed in relation to trends in violent and non-violent crimes. The study is guided by strain theory and social disorganization theory, which explain how economic stress and weakened social structures can push individuals toward criminal activities. Findings from the review suggest a strong link between worsening economic conditions and rising crime rates, particularly among youths and urban populations. The study concludes that reducing crime in Nigeria requires not only stronger law enforcement but also comprehensive economic and social policies aimed at job creation, poverty reduction, education, and social welfare. The paper recommends integrated strategies that address the root economic causes of crime as a pathway to sustainable peace and development in Nigeria.
